Itzamná, in Maya mythology, is a high-ranking creator deity thought to reside in the sky. Itzamná is one of the most important gods in the Classic and Postclassic Maya pantheon. According to the colonial Spanish priest Diego de Landa, Itzamná was considered Kinich Ahau Itzamná (the first Priest), or the first teacher of Maya writing, thus astronomy.

According to Franciscan historian, Diego López de Cogolludo, Itzamná was a sort of priest who divided the land of the Yucatán. In an alternative tradition, Itzamná fathered thirteen sons with Ixchel (Moon Goddess), two of whom created the earth and humankind.

In this image old musicians and their female companions prepare to play music in veneration of Itzamná. This image comes from a polychrome classic-era pot. The location of its origin is unknown due to centuries of official (archeology) and unofficial (black market) looting of the Maya Petén region. In any case, the vase has re-emerged and is carbon dated to 7th century.
